Governors, Premiers, environmental groups and corporations band together to support the Climate Registered program
June 23, 2010
Leaders are separating the wheat from the chaff in environmental programs
(June 23, 2010 – Chicago, ILL) Leading corporations from across North America are being honored today by Governors, Premiers and environmental groups for achieving Climate Registered status. Climate Registered Members represent over 205 million tons of carbon, which they are choosing to measure and manage according to The Registry’s rigorous voluntary reporting program.
In addition, fourteen outstanding organizations are being recognized for committing to reduce their footprints by up to 20% as part of the Climate Registered reduction program. The diverse group includes the Eastman Kodak Company, Flight Centre Canada, Allergan, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Ecology & Environment, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Seattle Steam Company, Armstrong World Industries, Bentley Prince Street, Left Coast Cellars, City of Austin, the US Postal Service, 3Degrees and Thurston County, Washington.
“When it comes to environmental programs, Climate Registered leads the pack because it requires corporations to measure their entire North American carbon footprint, verify the findings with an independent third party, and publicly report the results,” said Doug Scott, Chairman of The Climate Registry and Commissioner of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. “It is comprehensive and transparent and there is no other program out there as rigorous as the Climate Registered program.”
To help balance out the climate impact of the event honoring Climate Registered members, The Climate Registry purchased and retired third-party verified carbon offsets sourced through 3Degrees. These offsets represent real, quantifiable and permanent GHG emission reductions equivalent to 30 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The offsets were generated through the capture and destruction of methane at the Climate Action Reserve-registered Denton Landfill Gas Project.
The Climate Registered program is distinguished from other GHG reporting programs by a number of important features:
- The Registry’s program is supported by 41 US states and D.C., all the Canadian provinces and territories, six Mexican states and four native sovereign nations.
- The Registry’s protocols for measuring GHG emissions are aligned with international best practice, and have been referenced in US EPA’s mandatory reporting rule and cap-and-trade bills being considered in Congress.
- The Climate Registry is specifically noted in the SEC climate disclosure guidance document as one of the ways companies have been voluntarily reporting their GHG emissions.
- The Registry’s Climate Registered reporting program involves independent third party verification, which ensures that the GHG data being reported is accurate and reliable.
- Climate Registered Members publicly report their GHG inventories on The Registry’s website.
“The Climate Registered program provides both a roadmap and recognition for companies and organizations that are reducing their carbon pollution,” said Peter Lehner, Executive Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “NRDC has been reporting its own emissions with the Registry for many years, and we look forward to the ‘Silver, Gold or Platinum-worthy’ results that will be achieved as more institutions and corporations engage in this pollution-reduction program.”
“The Climate Registered program demonstrates to our stakeholders that we’re taking real and meaningful action,” said Charles Ruffing, Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability at Eastman Kodak Company. "Because we believe voluntary action is an important part of the solution, we encourage our peers, our suppliers and our business partners to join us in becoming Climate Registered.”
“Becoming Climate Registered isn't easy,” said Diane Wittenberg, Executive Director of The Climate Registry. “These organizations have measured their GHG footprints with accuracy, transparency and to verified international standards. No greenwashing here; that's real environmental leadership.”
